U.S. Olympians Receive Key to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. With the 2012 London Summer Olympics coming to an end, the city of Puerto Vallarta welcomed four record-breaking Olympians for some well-deserved R&R.
The Olympians being recognized in Puerto Vallarta are Rebecca Soni, Matt Grevers, Dana Vollmer and Ricky Berens who accumulated a total of 11 medals during the London Olympic Games. Along with being bestowed the highest honor of being given the Keys to the City, the city of Puerto Vallarta and the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board provided top-end accommodations for the athletes. These generous offerings were a sign of recognition for their hard work, resilience and determination. The U.S. Olympic Swimming Team medalists enjoyed four days of gorgeous sunny weather, beautiful pristine beaches, delicious authentic Mexican dining as well as exciting Zip-Lining and Horseback Riding tours.
The London Game Olympians received the Keys to the City at the iconic Los Arcos arches by the ocean in the presence of fans, government representatives as well as public and private authorities. Puerto Vallarta’s Director of Tourism, Carlos Gerard, flawlessly expressed his appreciation for the athletes’ accomplishments in a short speech and presentation ceremony under the hot Mexican sun. There was also a special appearance by Nacho Cadenas, president of the Puerto Vallarta Hotel Association. Following the ceremony, the famous Olympians enjoyed a meet-and-greet with local young and uppencoming Mexican swim team members. Their autograph session and encouraging words to the young athletes was a notable highlight.
Rebecca Soni (@rebsoni), a New Jersey native, is a breaststroke specialist and six-time Olympic medalist. At the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, she won a silver medal in the 100-meter breaststroke and a gold medal in the 200-meter breaststroke, breaking her current world record. She currently holds the world record in the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke, and is the first woman to swim the 200-meter breaststroke in under 2 minutes 20 seconds. She also holds the world record in the 4×100-meter medley relay. In total, she currently holds five world records.
Ricky Berens (@RickyBerens) aka Richard Berens (born in Charlotte, North Carolina) is an American swimmer and two-time Olympic gold medalist. As part of the American team, he holds the world record in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay. He competed in the 4×100-meter and 4×200-meter freestyle relay events, as well as the individual 200-meter freestyle at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Matt Grevers (@MattGrevers), accompanied by fiancée Annie Chandler (@Annie_Channie) enjoyed Puerto Vallarta, they have since gotten married. Matthew Grevers (from Lake Forest, Illinois) competes in the backstroke and freestyle events, and is a six-time Olympic medalist. He has won a total of twenty medals in major international competition, ten gold, seven silver, and three bronze spanning the Olympics, World Championships, and the Universiade. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he won a gold in the 100-meter backstroke.
Dana Vollmer (@DanaVollmer) was joined in Puerto Vallarta by her husband Andy Grant (@AndyWGrant). in 2003, Dana underwent heart surgery to correct a condition called supraventricular tachycardia, which produces a quickened pulse rate but ultimately beat the odds and is now a decorated Olympic athlete. Dana Whitney Vollmer born in Syracuse, New York is an American swimmer, Olympic gold medalist, and world record holder. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, Vollmer set the world record on her way to the gold medal in the 100-meter butterfly and won gold in the 4×100-meter medley relay and 4×200-meter freestyle relay. Vollmer has won a total of thirty medals in major international competitions, including eighteen gold medals, eight silver, and four bronze, spanning the Olympics, the World Championships, the Pan American Games, the Pan Pacific Championships, and the Goodwill Games.
