We just returned from a wonderful vacation in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; did you know that Puerto Vallarta is tucked away in the middle of the Bay of Banderas, in the Mexican pacific coast? There you will find a gorgeous tourist town rapidly becoming one of the most popular holiday spots in the world and we want to share our experience. We found an incredible Puerto Vallarta Villas, called Vista del Sol, overlooking Los Muertos beach.
The view from the wrap around infinity pool was breath-taking, during the season; they told us that you can watch the migrating whales while in the pool! There is a gourmet kitchen with all the toys and a dining room table that will allow 8 people to eat together. For the kids, big ones included, there is a huge game room with a full size pool table and big screen flat TV. They even had the NFL package so that we could watch all the Sunday action! A huge natural rock that is actually part of the wall accents the game room and built in bar area. And again the view was amazing! Our maid, Carolina, was super helpful with everything. She was born in the area and was able to tell us where to find the best food, gifts, and activities. She even helped us learn a little bit of Spanish.
In town we found great pizza at Encuentros, as well as four identical masked Mexican superheroes, dressed up for Halloween. When we asked them the significance of the costume, we found out that they were from Puerto Vallarta Rentals, the company that had rented us the Puerto Vallarta Condo, what a hoot!
After pizza we went bar hopping and found Fridas, where we spent hours enjoying the music and local people. Our concierge turned us on to some great day trips. We took a boat to secluded beaches, had lunch on the beach, and oh, the open bar on the boat was something too! Swimming with the Dolphins, Zip lines, and jungle tours were other options that we had.
I didn’t know that Puerto Vallarta is reported to be the most repeated holiday destinations on earth. By that, they mean that more people return here for a second, third or more holidays than any other place they go… we just want to say thanks for all those who made our vacation so special, we will be back!

You’re going to die within two years or possibly 10 yearsâ€.  That was the best case and worst case prognosis Gary Walton was given by his urologist upon being diagnosed in 2004 with an aggressive prostate cancer.
Walton, a resident of Rodeo, California, was 64 years old at the time of his diagnosis. Since then he has rebounded from that dismal prognosis and is retaining the richness of his life with alternative treatments that offer far less negative side effects than any of the treatments recommended by his U.S. doctors.
“It was devastating to get that diagnosis,†said Walton, “It was presented by the doctor like a death sentence. We asked him what kind of negatives would introduce at that time, and his response was, ‘there’s a lot of things that can happen, but you just have to understand that this is the only way that you can go.’
All the doctor wanted to do was to surgically take out my prostate. It was pretty much a given that after surgery I was going to be incontinent and impotent.†“Prostate cancer is devastating to a male because it attacks the male testosterone and the male physiology and consequently that’s all devastating mentally as well as the physical problems,†said Walton, “Men in their late 70’s and 80’s may have only slight sexual urges. But when you’re in your 50’s and 60’s and still virile, it’s absolutely devastating.â€
The Walton’s researched alternative treatments, insisting on referrals to physicians specializing in Brachytherapy seed implantation and radiation. “Because of my Gleason number, I was told I was not a candidate for seed implantation†so I started radiation treatments.  At no time did any of the doctors we saw give us any indication that there were other alternative treatments,†said Walton.
I was prescribed Lupron for about four months and the side effects were just horrendous. “Lupron has tremendously negative side effects for men. The side effects are that you lose bone mass, you lose muscle mass, you lose hair. You get heavy in the hips, your breasts enlarge. Your whole physiology changes from masculine to feminine. It is medical castration.
I couldn’t even look at myself in the mirror. I couldn’t even recognize myself. I was also fainting so I couldn’t even trust myself to drive. I lost all kinds of energy. It was just totally devastating.  “I joked with my wife, I said, honey “don’t throw any dresses away, because you married a man but you’re going to end up with a sister.“
After my 40 radiation treatments my PSA had gone down and it stayed stabilized for about a year, year and a half, but then it started doubling. We were very concerned that the cancer was returning with a vengeance.
I woke up one morning after a sleepless night and I told my wife, “you know this is a big wide world. In Europe, in Asia, in South America and in Canada, there must be some research going on that maybe we don’t know about here in the U.S., so one of the first places we went to was WHO, The World Health Organization. They suggested HIFU and Dendritic treatments. That’s when the Waltons chose to travel outside the U.S. for the treatments they required. “I could have gone to Canada, but because it was February, we chose Mexico.†Their research started by contacting HIFU in Charlotte, North Carolina.
HIFU has a contract with San Javier Hospital, Puerto Vallarta, for Dr. Raul Morales of the IIB Clinic for Dendritic and Dr. Carlos Garcia for the HIFU procedure. Robert Johnson, with HIFU, arranged everything for us including air and hotel accommodations and no-cost shuttle service daily from hotel to San Javier Hospital.
Between my first and second trip to Mexico for Dendritic treatments I had not taken any additional medications or treatments suggested by my doctors in California. I knew that since my PSA had been level for almost a year that it had to be due to the Dendritic treatment.
Walton said there are clinical trials of Dendritic treatments going on in the U.S. “I sought the opinion of Dr. Lawrence Fong, University of California San Francisco Medical Center. He is a specialist in the Dendritic area and feels there were worthwhile clinical trials going on showing positive proof that Dendritic treatments would be a good treatment procedure for all kinds of cancer.
Walton said it’s been his experience that doctors in the U.S. don’t give you all the information you need to make an analysis for yourself. “They are handcuffed and gagged by the healthcare system and by the hospitals because they ar so afraid of any kind of litigation,†said Walton, “They don’t have your best interests at heart. They have the hospital’s bes interests at heart.â€
“I question why the FDA is so slow in the approval process when these alternative treatments have been proven and in use for years in other countries,†said Walton.
Walton has made three trips to Puerto Vallarta for treatment. Based on the predictable results, the Waltons anticipate maintaining his PSA level by making annual trips to Puerto Vallarta for the treatment. Each trip takes about week. The treatment procedure at IIB consists of four sessions that Walton describes in detail in a separate recorded interview.
“The cost of the HIFU treatment was $25,000.00. The first treatment of both HIFU and Dendritic in February 2007, cost $50,000.00. The last two Dendritic treatments have each been approximately $13,000,†said Walton.
â€At all times we were treated with the upmost respect and professionalism. For a very difficult experience, in a strange country, everyone made us feel comfortable. We had an English speaking interpreter with us at all times during the treatments and available 24/7 for our calls and questions†said Walton.
“I truly feel that a doctor who has signed the oath and knows that there are other treatments out there that could be extremely beneficial, and if they don’t give you the information and allow you to know that and their patient dies, I think that is the most cruel thing that any doctor can do.†said Walton.

Despite Vallarta’s growing fame, local art is still priced fairly. Their rainbow circle includes the intriguing Jorge Marin, who gives his sensual bird-men gymnasts’ bodies, and Rocio Caballero’s playful male and female nymphs, who gambol underwater with nude abandon. Downtown Art Walks are held biweekly late October through April. During the “Art Season†the public is invited to attend cocktail receptions during “Art Walk†inaugurations. After Puerto Vallarta found its way onto the international tourism map following the release of “The Night of the Iguana,†the city became a meeting place for artists, musicians and anyone seeking a cosmopolitan destination amongst incredible natural beauty. As a result, numerous festivals have developed in Puerto Vallarta, celebrating everything from independent film to haute cuisine. Throughout the year, these events welcome awestruck visitors from throughout the world and add to Puerto Vallarta’s standing as one of Mexico’s premier destinations.
Inspired by the legacy of director John Huston and his film, “The Night of the Iguana,†the Puerto Vallarta Film Festival of the Americas brings together the best independent films and documentaries from North and South America each year. Similar to the Cannes and Sundance festivals, the Puerto Vallarta Film Festival of the Americas features more than a week full of screenings supported by lectures, workshops and parties. The festival takes place each year during the first or second week of November, immediately before the beginning of peak tourism season. Families visiting Puerto Vallarta on a strict budget should consider traveling during this period as travel costs are lower, the weather is great and there is certainly plenty to experience.
Families visiting Puerto Vallarta in the weeks before the beginning of high tourism season can also participate in the city’s acclaimed Gourmet Festival. For 14 years, the Puerto Vallarta Gourmet Festival has brought together some of the world’s best chefs and the finest fare Mexico has to offer. Often, Michelin-star chefs collaborate with local restaurants to create unique menus inspired by the culture and scenery of Puerto Vallarta. Most of these dinners, along with the cooking classes and tasting events, are open to the public. The Puerto Vallarta Gourmet Festival usually takes place during the second and third weeks of November, occasionally overlapping with the Puerto Vallarta Film Festival of the Americas.
The May Cultural Festival has become a prestigious tradition in Mexico’s Jalisco state, reaching towns such as Zapopan, La Barca, Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta. Though a number of the headline performances take place in Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta puts on a number of exhibits and performances by international artists. Each year, the festival honors a foreign country by welcoming the visual artists and musical performers that represent the finest each nation has to offer. This year’s festival was dedicated to Germany and featured concerts by the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and gallery exhibits by up-and-coming German artists. Though the schedule for next year’s festival has not been announced, visitors will have a chance to experience the cultural sites of Puerto Vallarta, accompanied by the finest music and art from another unique culture. The May Cultural Festival takes place each year during the entire month of May with most major events scheduled during the final two weeks.
Puerto Vallarta is also home to the world’s newest contemporary art festival. Known officially as Puerto Vallarta: Arte Contemporaneo, the festival is designed to bring together the work of Mexican and international artists. This year, the festival focused on artists from the United States and Mexico and featured panel discussions on issues as diverse as globalization, extended borders and the cultural identities of Mexican artists working in the United States. Many of the artists featured in this year’s festival exhibited work at prestigious venues such as the Whitney Biennial and the Tate Modern in London. Puerto Vallarta: Arte Contemporaneo plans to return next year during the final weekend of May with larger exhibits and more special events.
The local art scene is celebrated each year in November during the Festival de las Artes. During the final week of the month, nearly all of Puerto Vallarta’s art galleries stage elaborate openings and events that welcome art aficionados and curious travelers alike. As much of the work on display belongs to Mexican artists, including many Puerto Vallarta residents, many of the artists are on hand at the events to discuss the trade with art lovers. Now entering its 12th season, the Festival de las Artes is one of the best ways for tourists to experience the vibrant art scene of Puerto Vallarta. Garza Blanca on the other hand is a small city beach located off the Barra Navidad road at Km 6 on the way to Mismaloya. It haswhite sand beach framed with palms and crystal clear water. It is notorious with the locals on weekends who pack a picnic as there are no amenities while Destiladeras is the favorite with many Vallartans, especially by families. On Sundays, they flock here to appreciate the wide white sand beach and fresh seafood at its outdoor palapa-shaded restaurants at the edge of the water.
In Puerto Vallarta you’ll find a wide collection of restaurants. La Palapa is located on Playa los Muertos ans is one of the areas’ finest places to dine in. Here you can appreciate the great food in an elegant atmosphere. Tikul Pacific cuisine is a grill of great taste and superb dining. The restaurant reflects a culinary version of pacific cuisine. The area is made of a stone named Tikul which can only be found in Mexican villages while the River Cafe is located on the River Cuale Island. It is notorious restaurant offers gourmet dining with a great Mexican and International menu in an elegant atmosphere.
One of the finest features of Puerto Vallarta is the vast jungle that surrounds it where you can have your finest jungle and safari escapades. Exploring the jungles of the Sierra Madre is one of the top activities you’ll find here. Over 350 species of birds calls the jungle home with countless other species of animals including iguanas, monkeys, jaguar and more. The area welcomes travelers who want their vacation to be more wild and exciting by having bamboo rafting experience on a white rushing river and elephant riding in the jungle.
Nowadays, the area is not just about its highly urban city with mainly beach and shopping as its attractions, its rural side has delight and plenty spots that provides chance for memorable jungle experiences as well. There are also fantastic photo-taking opportunities as you stumble across beautiful waterfalls and ancient preserved temples along the way as you travel.
A mere couple of decades ago, sophisticated, expensive Puerto Vallarta was just a quaint little fishing village on the magnificent Bahia de las Banderas. Movies, however, changed all that. In the wake of The NIght of the Iguana, and the arrival of luminaries such as Richard Burton and Liz Taylor, condominiums, timeshare, luxury hotels and villas have given Puerto Vallarta a new attitude to life. Some of the old buildings in the original town have been altered to become fashionable restaurants, art galleries and souvenir shops, while the sandy central beaches along the 150km (93-mile) shore of Bahia de las Banderas have become favourites for daily cruise excursions.
On either side of the Rio Cuale, old Puerto Vallarta is the commercial centre of this pretty town. A lovely malecon, or promenade, provides a focal point each evening for strollers and itinerant vendors. There are galleries, cafes, shops and a small Museo Arqueologico. The shady Plaza de Armas is the main square or zocalo. Here the Palacio Municipal houses the tourist office, while a block to the east is the Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe with its unusual tower. The annual fiesta of the Virgin of Guadalupe is particularly riotous here, with more than ten days of celebrations. Other notable dates include the Semana Santa celebrations, the annual fishing tournament in November, and the biennial Regatta between the Marina del Rey and Puerto Vallerta.
Mariachi, indeed all music, is big in Puerto Vallarta, and there are a number of local restaurants where live mariachi music accompanies dinner. Catering to the diner who wants a touch of Mexican culture with a buffet, the long-standing La Iguana offers nightly shows, as do many of the luxury hotels.
